This is a clip from the 3rd installment of the X-Men trilogy. This clip describes the conflict of the entire film fairly well. In this movie, a cure to the mutant gene has become available and made accessible to the public. There is a conflict here between mutants and non-mutants. Some mutants feel as if this cure is being forced upon them and the non-mutants don’t know what this feels like. In this story, the non-mutants are fearful of those who are different. This is much like people today. In our society, tolerance for those who are different seems to be a common theme, but there are still many people who have a problem with those who are different. For example, all members of society were completely tolerant; there would be no racism or “gay bashing.”
It seems that in this clip, intolerance for difference was apparent between the mutants and non-mutants, but it was also evident between the mutants. I think the message of the movie was that intolerance is not acceptable in a changing world. The younger generations, who will one day be leading the world, could stand to learn this lesson from the movie.
There is definitely a power struggle in this movie. The mutants seem to have power in the sense of “super powers”, but they don’t realize the “power” they have. They are aware that they are different than the non-mutants, but they keep to themselves and don’t see that they could use different “powers”, such as influence and friendship with the non-mutants to gain trust and change attitudes. The influential non-mutants seem to realize this and view the mutants as a threat because the non-mutants are afraid of change. Their fear is their “power”; they are terrified and speak out to mutants and non-mutants alike. Also the more revered mutants have control and power over those who are younger and who respect them.

Showing tolerance for something/someone has always been a big issue in society even back into the days of colonialism. There is religious tolerance, sexual tolerance as well as others. The reason why tolerance for certain actions and beliefs do not spread as quickly as they should is because people from older generations are still trying to enforce their generation beliefs into those young people of the future. It is completely inexcusable why more things/people in this world are not tolerated because the world cannot afford to stand still on tolerance when everything is constantly changing.
I think that you did a great job picking out the gay analogy in the movie. I know that finding a “cure” for homosexuality is a very controversial subject and its interesting how they use something like x-men to make that analogy. Having watched x-men and read the comic I know that there has always been an ongoing theme of acceptance of diversity. I also think that it relates how some of the mutants try to blend in while others learn to be open and proud about it. I would like to see you explore this aspect more.
This clip showed the intolerance of difference really well and i think it could be in reference to a lot of different topics, not just homosexuality, even though that is a great one to use. The clip shows how close minded humans can be. It seems that a lot of people think that just because they know something to be a certain way, any other way is wrong. Even with religion. People are dieing in wars based on religion. Just because you think you're religion is the one that is correct, it's the same way for someone else of a different religion, or else they wouldn't believe in what they believe in. Humans just seem to be very close minded in general, and I think that this x-men clip really puts the magnifying glass on that from both sides. On one side theres a father who wants his son to be his own version of normal. but this normal isn't the same normal as the son's and other mutants. There is a new "cure" but the mutants say there isn't a cure because there isn't anything to cure, they are their own idea of normal.
